Jacques Lesourne was an economist and an alumni of the Ecole Polytechnique in France. He has held numerous posts, beginning as the head of economic services at Charbonnages de France (1954-1957). He next served as the executive director of the Sema Group (1958-1975), before going on to become the director of the Interfutures Project with the OECD (1976- 1979). He was a professor of economics (1974-1998), while also serving as the head of the economic and business department at the Conservatoire National des Arts et Métiers (1974-1991).

He was furthermore the director of the newspaper Le Monde from 1991 to 1994. Notably, he has presided over the French Association of Economic Science (1981-1983) and the International Federation of Operational Research Societies (IFORS) (1986-1989). He currently oversees the association Futuribles, the project FutuRIS, and the Scientific Committee of the Ifri Energy Program.

He has published thirty books on prospective studies and economics.
