Abstract

The key areas of German-Russian economic relations have been here considered in detail. Tables and diagrams show the leading position of Germany in Russia’s foreign trade and concerning inward foreign investment just as Russia’s relatively modest position in Germany’s import and export. The importance and limitations of Hermes export credit guarantees for German exports to Russia are discussed. Examples of successful and non-successful economic cooperation between Russia and Germany are given. German technical assistance to Russia (the TRANSFORM-Program) and some remarks at the future settlement of old Soviet debts conclude the analysis.

Roland Götz and Christian Meier are Research Fellows at the Russian Federation Unity of the German Institute for International Affairs and Security (SWP, Berlin).
