<p class="rtejustify">From <strong>May 2021</strong>, Russia will chair the Arctic Council for two years. During this period, Moscow vows to promote economic development and environmental protection of the polar region. At the same time, Russia continues to implement its ambitious political, economic and military agenda. However, the country is also facing long-lasting social and demographic difficulties that limit its action in the area.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="rtejustify">The <strong>Russian Chairmanship of the Arctic Council </strong>research axis within the <a href="/en/recherche/zones-geographiques/russie-eurasie"><strong>Russia / Eurasia Center</strong></a>&nbsp;provides analysis on Russian strategy and public policy in the Arctic region. It also tackles infrastructural issues such as the development of the Northern Sea Route, the continuation of industrial gas projects in the Yamal Peninsula, and future oil and mining projects in the Taimyr Peninsula. Finally, this research axis pays a particular attention to Russia’s relations with other Arctic states and non-Arctic powers.&nbsp;</p>
