Abstract:

Genetically modified plants are becoming more common in world agriculture, including in developing countries. Do they provide a solution to world hunger, as claimed by major agribusiness corporations in the US? GM foods should neither be blindly rejected nor acclaimed as the miracle solution. For developing countries to benefit from their potential, genetically modified organisms (GMOs) must be strictly monitored and regulated. The international community should consider adopting a ‘Charter for Essential Food’ which would promote genuinely sustainable agriculture that would serve the interests of the first victims of hunger: small farmers in poor countries.
