It is astonishing and even paradoxical that despite the successful Franco-German reconciliation process and the abundance of bilateral meetings, the neighbouring countries are faced with a dwindling interest of the young generation. The Franco-German relations were especially during the post war period at the centre of interest. In this regard, it seems to be remarkable that the success of the reconciliation process ended in a decline of efforts made in order to push forward the development of bilateral relations. Besides, the significance of both countries also diminished according to the enlargement of the European Union. As Germany and France are facing serious socio-political and economic problems, a lack of efficient Franco-German initiatives on an European level is the consequence.

The future decision-makers of both countries are demanded to realise that it's up to them to give an impulse to the Frenco-German cooperation. The spheres of civil society and of politics are the most concerned. There is no doubt that deepened knowledge of the bordering country as well as interest and commitment based on long-lasting personal relations are indispensable.

The aim of this "Franco-German network of young elites" is to give the future decision-makers the chance to take part in discussions about the German, French and European future as well as to develop a cross-border cooperation. Thanks to a dynamic network of students and young qualified employees, these aims are likely to be achieved. The "Franco-German network of young elites" was set up by the Centre on Franco-German relations (Ifri), the DGAP and financial help support is given by the Robert Bosch Foundation.
